Special effects are carried out by dark-suited kuroko (a convention borrowed from kabuki) that-- along with puppetry, video, projection, sound effects and lighting-- to recreate the unique look of anime for the live stage.

NeoTokyo Girl Crush! 2040 has appeared in two different stage productions at the famous Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in New York City. The 2002 production ran for four months and developed a cultish following. The most recent Girl Crush! 2040 ran from May to October 2004 and was even bigger and better than its predecessor. Both versions were created by improv veteran Dyna Moe (Feature Feature, Monkeydick) and directed by Brian Huskey (Best Week Ever, Trev &The Rev, Sunshine Gang).

NeoTokyo Girl Crush! 2040 features an all-star cast of comedians whose combined credits include the Respecto Montalban, Naked Babies, hundreds of improv shows, The Upright Citizens Brigade TV Show, a myriad of VH1 clip shows (Best Week Ever, A 2 Z), Late Night with Conan O'Brien and loads of other cool things.
